Keto adapted
I thought I would write an article on what it is like to be keto adapted. In general, I watch the carbohydrates I eat and try to minimize them. I would bet that I am under 50 gms of carbohydrates 90 percent of the time.I try to get 60 percent of my calories from fat , around 20-30 percent from protein, with carbohydrates supplying 10-20 percent. I also practice intermittent fasting a couple times a week. My story starts with a bike ride.
I am doing Ride the Rockies starting June 11, 2016. This is a 6 day bicycle tour in the Colorado Rockies. I usually train for this by slowly increasing the length of my rides until I can do an 5 hour ride. This past weekend was my last major training ride.
When I got up at 530 am I did a quick stretching routine and got my bike ready. I had a cowboy coffee to drink and left for my ride around 0615. A cowboy coffee consists of a cup of coffee, a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream and a tablespoon of coconut oil.
I rode my bike 21 miles up the canyon to Estes Park. This is all uphill. The only nourishment I had was one water bottle in 2 hours. Once in Estes I took a short break and then headed for Lyons which is another 20 miles away and took approximately an hour. Finished off another bottle of water. Here I stopped for a cup of coffee which I put some coconut oil and cream in. I also ate a handful of macadamia nuts.
At this point I headed back to Loveland which was 27 miles away and I included a climb of Carter Lake at the end just for the heck of it. Ride time was approximately 5 hours for 68 miles of riding and 4000 feet of climbing.
Now I am a 52 year old weekend warrior, so the times are not amazing, but I was active for almost 5 hours working hard for my ability.
Was I hungry? I had 5 hours of exercising in me with 2 cowboy coffees and lots of water and I wasn’t that hungry. When I used to be a high carb eater I had to be constantly refueling with gels and bars in order to keep up this level of activity. In fact, if I would stop refueling I would bonk. How is this possible ?
The human body has about 2000 calories of glycogen stores but 40,000 to 100,000 calories stored away as fat. If you are keto adapted you are able to access those stores and you will not bonk. For the heck of it I checked my blood sugar after the ride and it was 82. I checked my blood ketones and they were 3.0. What this means is that my body was using ketones(burning fat) in order to supply the energy for my ride. The other thing I found amazing was that I had minimal muscle soreness. Being keto adapted is completely amazing.
